This is how it works. The competitor buys ads for your site on another website with links on every pages. This sounds like a good idea, you might be thinking why a competitor would waste money to promote your site. Well, here is where the problem is. Google does not like that practice of having your links on 1000s of pages on another website. They will usually ban sites for that and there is where the flaw is. Your good site will get banned on google for a competitor's devilish ways. Still don't understand? Search the web for better and more detailed explanation. "Google bowling"
