If you want a Halo them for your site, why don't you try to take an existing theme, that has at least the basic colour scheme you want, create your own graphics from Halo screenshots, rename those to replace existing banners and overwrite the old images. Buttons are pretty easy to create with loads of great freeware applications available for the purpose.

I have not looked at it, but my suggestion would be to take the graphics from a theme pack like this and replace exisiting ones, by renaming the Halo images. That way you do not need to play around with all the code.

Changing background and border colours is pretty straightforward through the CSS.

It is a patchy way to do it, but I like to find simple answers to complex issues, that leaves me more time to focus on other things.
