This is in part due to my hatred for OEM operating systems. Most of you know what I am talking about. You purchase your new computer and it has those pesky recovery discs. This of course has your operating system ie. Windows.
The hard drive crashes a year later and now you are left without an OS too. Is it fair that you have to re purchase the OS that you currently own?

I think each computer should have a Windows disc and not the OEM.

I can't wait for Ubuntu to have all I need so I can switch.

Well...

Who says that you have to go out and buy the OS all over again ...

Since you own the computer you are allowed to Install that version on 1 PC eg the new Hard Drive is on your old PC. The os is still only on 1 PC ... But it will work if you install it on the new hardrive if that was your question....

However most of the time if you buy your box from a company like dell or gateway etc..... You end up with a ton of promo crap along with it ...

If you dont mind deleting all the promo crap everytime you re install the OS then theres really no issue. Otherwise you gotta go out and buy your favorite OS all over again promo crap free but you will always have a nice clean version of it. There are other ways of obtaining it wich Im sure are not allowed to be posted here lol .

Oh yes btw you can rip out the OS from the recovery disks, then create an image and burn the image to a disk ...

I think it's very unfair. That's part of the reason I hate Microsoft. If I ever bought a pre-built PC and wanted windows pre-installed on it, I would DEMAND they give me the proper install discs. I'd have to pay for it, so why should I only get recoveries?

But I use Ubuntu. Have for a few months, and I love it. Although I miss my games, that's shortly being fixed when I do a full system upgrade and install WINE or possibly slave an XP hard-drive.

I actually recently installed Xubuntu and Kubuntu and E17 onto my system, but I prefer good old Gnome. I like how pretty and fast E17 is, but I'm not used to it yet so haven't figured everything out.

I just recenty had this problem with my laptop. I did not pay for the OS disc. I got online with my "good" PC and told the manufactuer that I needed the OS disc. They overnighted the disc to me no questions asked and I did not hafta pay a penny. So, although evil, some companys will do whatever you want to retain your business.
