We have a population of around 500,000 spread over the entire land surface, of which it is said, that if you flatten out the ranges the land would actually be larger than the mainland. Not sure if that is true, but the entire island is rolling hills, and what we call mountains. Our mountains are small compared to the rest of the world, averaging around 1200 metres, but they look fantastic to us. Around 60% of the state is world heritage wilderness, and much of that is so wild and rugged it has been completely unexplored. We still do not know what kinds of flaura and fauna we may find in vast areas of the island. This is where the world's air and water purity are measured because we have the cleanest air and water in the world. Everywhere you go here you see rivers and lakes. It is a dramatically changing landscape, with a new breath-taking sight around each corner you turn. (I am not exaggerating) My home is situated at the top of a mountain, about 20 metres from the absolute crest. Looking out my front wall (the entire front of the house is glass) I am currently seeing a natural bushland of trees and shrubs, leading down to a large bay. Beyond that is a small, pasture covered hill, and beyond that a snow capped mountain. This can be snow capped even in summer here, it is very spectacular, but that is typical of Tasmania.
