There is a new version of CPMail. It's built for nuke 7.5 and up but it easy to make it work for lower versions. It has an admin feature, that you won't see in nuke 7.4 or lower, for adding your server data so you don't have to open the config file.
It also has account creation limits.

I still have concerns.

Security will depend on two things:
1. The trust you have in your members.
(I would suggest only offering an account to those you really trust and or creating a user group with an extremely high level of member involvement.)

2. Choosing a mail program.
(Squirrel Mail has admin controls whereby you can restrict certain sub-account features.)


Those are the biggies for me.
IMHO, the worst thing a script kiddie could do is create multiple accounts.
Once the accounts are created, the level of abuse will depend on the level of control you have allowed new accounts.
